Our first unit is on Recount Writing. We will explore the features of recounts then practice a number of our own. This will lead to the first summative task for the year. We will:
Do a 4 Corners activity to get us going Look at a series of images to inspire some practice recounts Use a Recount Framework chart Complete the task in class, then you will edit it at home for submission.
SUMMATIVE TASK
The task sheet will be emailed to you and your parents. If you cannot access it from email, then it is available HERE and as a printed version from your teacher.....
INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY
Instructions
Divide a page into 4
In the Top Left corner write a list of events from your past that you would be prepared to talk about to someone else
For 1 minute, talk with a partner about why you chose those topics.
Choose ONE of those events and write it at the top of the TOP Right corner
Brainstorm all the small events that were part of your chosen Event. Try to answer the following questions.
For 1 minute, explain to your partner what happened
In the Bottom Left corner, write 5 possible opening sentences for your Recount
Get your partner to choose the best one and ask them to explain why.
In the Bottom Right Corner, rewrite the best opening sentence.
Now extend that opening sentence into a draft first paragraph.
We will then take your draft 1st paragraph and extend it into a Practice Recount.
In this package of examples we have some excellent recounts from: a past student (Jonty's Recount), Roald Dahl (a trip to the Doctor) and James Herriot as well as a couple of extra examples for your reading pleasure.
Look at how these recounts have been structured, what type of language they've used, and try to model these in your own work.
